[Review] Gummy’s There is No Love </3

Gummy has officially kicked things off for YG Entertainment’s return to the spot lights of mainstream media.  2NE1, Big Bang, among several solo acts are set to march right into our faces come summer time.

Gummy’s been hanging around since her debut in 2003.  She’s YG’s solo female vocalist and this month she has made a come back with a new song and is releasing an upcoming mini-album said to be titled Loveless.

There is No Love was released ahead of her actual title track which she’ll be revealing the same day her mini-album drops (29th).

The song itself is not that bad.  It has Western influence written all over it, though.  Instrumentally-wise, I mean.  If you remove her vocals and leave the instrumentation to play on its own – I bet $5.00 you’d think it was spawned somewhere in the U.S.  It’s a safe deduction given all the music being played on national radio stations here.

I suppose it isn’t that big of a deal because when it comes down to it, it’s still Korean.  The chorus isn’t as exciting as it could have been, but goddamn! those verses are nice.  Although I personally think her singing capacity isn’t as broad as various people would like to believe, she still pretty much served it to me in this song.  Again, I like this song solely on the verses.  They work really beautifully with the tappity-tap-taps in the background.

If I had a ginormous title to my name and had the power and honor to skip on over to Korea and give them a small suggestion on how to innovate the structure in their songs, I’d love to calmly tell YG, plus every other big named company, that their middle 8s need some attention because a lot of Korean pop’s middle 8s sound relatively similar – so much so, that it’s starting to bug me.

Someone, break the rules.  Bust out a song with much more of an interesting structure.  Please?

ps.  I very much enjoy Korean pop music. But giving everyone a little somethin’-somethin’ wouldn’t hurt anyone.

pps. Looking GOOD Gummy!
