[Review] Code V – Poisoning EP

One more boyband review to complete this week’s trilogy of boyband reviews. So far, I’ve given X-Cross and Infinite straight As.  Will Code V pass with flying colors?  Continue reading to find out.

Code V (Taemin, Sang Woo, Nallo, Sol and Jae Won) is actually no stranger to Kpop, as they previously debuted in 2007 as Bless but supposedly flopped.  I don’t fully understand why, since a couple of their previous songs weren’t half-bad.  But they’ve reinvented themselves with a new name and new material and have debuted recently with their recent EP, Poisoning.

“Addiction” is Code V’s title track debut and they will face the true test of survival among Kpop boybands this week.  Listening to their previous songs, such as Homme, I could tell these guys had a genuine talent for singing, but when the idea of a revival arose, I feared the worst – autotune galore.

Luckily, they’ve stayed true to their easygoing-sound and veered far from the dreadful processing that consumes today’s top idols.  “Addiction”, though quick paced, possesses a rather dreamy aura that steadily looms through its melodies.  The delivery of Code V’s vocals is gentle at first and swiftly belted with confidence toward the climax.  This song in particular reminds me of Big Bang’s Haru Haru.  It doesn’t carry the swag and explosiveness of Haru Haru, but the feeling in both songs are similar, making me very happy as I listen to Code V’s “Addiction”.

The second song on Poisoning is “내가 더 슬퍼“.  It’s sweet.  The obvious absence of harsh processing on their voices is a breath of fresh air.  To be honest, this song wont be exploding on music charts since it’s so mellow and laid-back, but I kind of enjoy it’s loungy sense of freedom.  The pause during the middle 8 was held out a hair too long for my taste and it loses it’s footing for a second when the rap comes in out of no where, but as a whole – it’s likable.

Code V have convinced me that they have strong vocals and they’ve charmed me with their spirited melodies.  I only wish they weren’t going for a dark concept in their promotional pictures.  It’s summer time, boys, you’re gonna get hot in those black suits!

  1. I love these guys, already. I even made a forum. I’m very happy to see you reviewed them. and gave them a high grade.

    • Oh, nice! Where’d you make a forum? I think these guys have major talent. I hope their comeback makes a bigger impact this time around.

I really believe they do. I can’t see what happened the first time around, for them not to become popular. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time? I really think now things will be different. People are really catching on to them, being interested. It’s exciting!
