[Review] [Single] SHINee – “Dazzling Girl”

written by: McRoth

Oddly enough, bright, uplifting pop jams by boy bands in K-Pop have been few and far between this year. If you’ve experienced what a K-Pop year feels like, you’ll understand that trends last forever and die hard, and this year we’ve experienced boy bands stomping the yards and going as hard as they can go in what I’m calling the masculine trend of 2012: boys acting on their toughness rather than just flashing skin. It’s kind of a breath of fresh air, especially if you think back to the way boy bands used to approach this angle; i.e., tearing their shirts off for the sake of tearing their shirts off. Looking macho and actually being macho through actions are two different things and I like that we’ve gotten a healthy dose of change this year.

That said, I’m not opposed to boy bands serving uplifting tunes either, like Super Junior did with “No Other” in 2010. There have been some this year, definitely, but not as spontaneously happy and pretty as I’d like them to be.

Well, enter SHINee, who are one of the most inclined at this than most boy bands, who hopped over to Japan and dropped the gloriously whimsical “Dazzling Girl“.

A J-Pop single, sadly, with energy for days, “Dazzling Girl” encompasses all the aspects of a bright pop anthem and then some. Its design is so Major key; so novelty; so addictive. It’s such a well thought-out recipe for joy and all things good in this world, that there’s no way I could ever not feel warm inside when I listen to it. Every voice in SHINee works well with these songs, arguably moreso than when they’re challenging a far darker themed jam, that “Dazzling Girl” becomes that much easier to listen to.

Onew‘s velvety smooth voice box of awesome resonates beautifully at the middle eight, while Jonghyun and Taemin lay out a blanket of lovely high end throughout the body of the song. They each work it out really well, and the end result is rewarding for everyone.

    • Me too. A lot of people hate the MV, which I understand. For some reason though, I find myself liking all the crazy fur and stuff. It looks so flamboyant and so SHINee.

  1. Aww I thought it would be panned, because like Lucifer, I think grows less potent (more annoying) the more it is played. Hmm.. is it a song that you’ll go back to every now and again?
